The emergence of Anaplasma bovis or A. bovis-like infection in humans from China and the United States of America has raised concern about the public health importance of this pathogen. Although A. bovis has been detected in a wide range of ticks and mammals in the world, no genome of the pathogen is available up to now, which has prohibited us from better understanding the genetic basis for its pathogenicity. Here we describe an A. bovis genome from metagenomic sequencing of an infected goat in China. Anaplasma bovis had the smallest genome of the genus Anaplasma, and relatively lower GC content. Phylogenetic analysis of single-copy orthologue sequence showed that A. bovis was closely related to A. platys and A. phagocytophilum, but relatively far from intraerythrocytic Anaplasma species. Anaplasma bovis had 116 unique orthogroups and lacked 51 orthogroups in comparison to other Anaplasma species. The virulence factors of A. bovis were significantly less than those of A. phagocytophilum, suggesting less pathogenicity of A. bovis. When tested by specific PCR assays, A. bovis was detected in 23 of 29 goats, with an infection rate up to 79.3% (95% CI: 64.6% ∼94.1%). The phylogenetic analyses based on partial 16S rRNA, gltA and groEL genes indicated that A. bovis had high genetic diversity. The findings of this study lay a foundation for further understanding of the biological characteristics and genetic diversity of A. bovis, and will facilitate the formulation of prevention and control strategies.

The process of vegetation restoration is often accompanied by significant changes in aboveground plant diversity. To explore the driving mechanism of litter nutrient-soil nutrient-enzyme activity stoichiometry on aboveground vegetation change is of great importance for maintaining regional biodiversity conservation and ecological stability. Taking typical abandoned farmland of different restoration years (1, 8, 16, 31, and 50 a) in the Qinling Mountains as the research object, the variation characteristics of plant community diversity during vegetation restoration were analyzed through field investigation. Litter nutrients, soil nutrients, and the activities of five extracellular enzymes, including ß-1,4-glucosidase (BG), cellobiohydrolase (CBH), ß-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG), leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), and acid phosphatase (AP), were determined. The characteristics of litter nutrients, soil nutrients, and enzyme stoichiometric ratios during vegetation restoration and the driving mechanism of plant diversity changes were discussed. The results showed that the plant community diversity index firstly decreased and then increased with the increase in vegetation restoration years, and the minimum was reached at 16 years after restoration. The results of principal component analysis showed that there were significant differences between total plant community diversity index and litter-soil-enzyme stoichiometric characteristics in different years of vegetation restoration. The plant community diversity index had a strong positive correlation with litter C∶P ratio and litter N∶P ratio but had a negative correlation with soil enzyme C∶P ratio (EEA C∶P). The results of redundancy analysis showed that soil EEA C∶P had the highest explanation rate of plant diversity changes during vegetation restoration (25.93%), followed by soil TP (5.94%), which was the key factor regulating plant diversity changes. In conclusion, plant species and quantity increased significantly in abandoned farmland in the middle part of the Qinling Mountains at the late stage of vegetation restoration. Changes in the soil environment affected microbial metabolic activities and thus changed enzyme activities. Litter-soil-soil extracellular enzymes affected the community environment and plant diversity through feedback and regulation. EEA C∶P and TP were the main driving factors of aboveground plant diversity change during vegetation restoration.

BACKGROUND: Acute gouty arthritis (AGA) is an inflammatory joint disease with a high prevalence. Typical medical interventions, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, colchicine and glucocorticoids, can have serious adverse reactions. Huzhang Granule (HZG), a compound Chinese herbal medicine, has been used to treat AGA for more than 30 years with satisfactory effects and no significant adverse reactions. However, the efficacy and safety of HZG in AGA patients remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: The present investigation was designed to examine the efficacy and safety profile of HZG in managing AGA patients. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS: The current study was conducted as a noninferiority, randomized controlled clinical trial on 180 eligible enrolled participants. Participants were randomly assigned into the HZG and etoricoxib groups. Treatments were administered for 5 d, during which the HZG group received HZG and placebo etoricoxib, while the etoricoxib group received etoricoxib and placebo HZG in the same ratio (1:1). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was pain experienced by the patient in the gout-afflicted joint from days 2 to 5 of the treatment window. The pain level was measured via a visual analogue scale, ranging from 0 mm to 100 mm. The secondary outcomes comprised joint tenderness and swelling, reduction of inflammatory biomarkers, and the patient's and investigator's global evaluations of therapeutic response. RESULTS: The mean reduction in pain was -51.22 mm (95% confidence interval [CI], [-53.42, -49.03] mm) for the HZG and -52.00 mm (95% CI, [-54.06, -49.94] mm) for the etoricoxib groups. The mean difference between the two groups was 0.78 mm (95% CI, [-2.25, 3.81] mm). All additional efficacy endpoints, covering decreased inflammation and pain relief, yielded compelling proof of noninferiority. Patients in the HZG group exhibited a comparatively lower rate of adverse events compared to those in the etoricoxib group (4.44% vs 13.33%; P ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSION: HZG and etoricoxib groups demonstrated similar levels of analgesic effectiveness. The safety and efficacy of HZG indicates that it can be used as a potential therapeutic option for treating AGA. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2000036970). Bolboschoenus planiculmis (F.Schmidt) T.V.Egorova is a typical wetland plant in the species-rich Cyperaceae family. This species contributes prominently to carbon dynamics and trophic integration in wetland ecosystems. Previous studies have reported that the chromosomes of B. planiculmis are holocentric; i.e. they have kinetic activity along their entire length and carry multiple centromeres. This feature was suggested to lead to a rapid genome evolution through chromosomal fissions and fusions and participate to the diversification and ecological success of the Bolboschoenus genus. However, the specific mechanism remains uncertain, partly due to the scarcity of genetic information on Bolboschoenus. We present here the first chromosome-level genome assembly for B. planiculmis. Through the integration of high-quality long-read and short-read data, together with chromatin conformation using Hi-C technology, the ultimate genome assembly was 238.01 Mb with a contig N50 value of 3.61 Mb. Repetitive elements constituted 37.04% of the genome, and 18,760 protein-coding genes were predicted. The low proportion of long terminal repeat retrotransposons (∼9.62%) was similar to that reported for other Cyperaceae species. The Ks (synonymous substitutions per synonymous site) distribution suggested no recent large-scale genome duplication in this genome. The haploid assembly contained a large number of 54 pseudochromosomes with a small mean size of 4.10 Mb, covering most of the karyotype. The results of centromere detection support that not all the chromosomes in B. planiculmis have multiple centromeres, indicating more efforts are needed to fully reveal the specific style of holocentricity in cyperids and its evolutionary significance.

Soil microbes, the main driving force of terrestrial biogeochemical cycles, facilitate soil organic matter turnover. However, the influence of the soil fauna on microbial communities remains poorly understood. We investigated soil microbiota dynamics by introducing competition and predation among fauna into two soil ecosystems with different fertilization histories. The interactions significantly affected rare microbial communities including bacteria and fungi. Predation enhanced the abundance of C/N cycle-related genes. Rare microbial communities are important drivers of soil functional gene enrichment. Key rare microbial taxa, including SM1A02, Gammaproteobacteria, and HSB_OF53-F07, were identified. Metabolomics analysis suggested that increased functional gene abundance may be due to specific microbial metabolic activity mediated by soil fauna interactions. Predation had a stronger effect on rare microbes, functional genes, and microbial metabolism compared to competition. Long-term organic fertilizer application increased the soil resistance to animal interactions. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of microbial community dynamics under soil biological interactions, emphasizing the roles of competition and predation among soil fauna in terrestrial ecosystems.

RATIONALE: During the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOC) using high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS), the ambient temperature significantly impacts the accuracy of planar FAIMS. To mitigate the influence of ambient temperature on detection accuracy and enhance resolution, a FAIMS system based on the inner impedance characteristics of a printed circuit board (PCB) was designed for temperature control. METHODS: This study, conducted under standard atmospheric pressure, aimed to assess the signal stability of a planar FAIMS instrument with and without temperature control, and the effect of temperature change on the detection ability of acetone, ethanol, and their mixture was studied using PCB self-heating. RESULTS: Experimental results demonstrated that the base noise in FAIMS with temperature control was 0.2 pA, whereas that in FAIMS without temperature control was 1.8 pA. Notably, with increasing temperature, the detection ability of FAIMS changes accordingly. The optimal relative detection ability of acetone was observed when the electrode plate was heated to 45°C under an electric field of 15 kV/cm. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a novel approach to improve the resolving power of FAIMS systems and their signal-to-noise ratio. The utilization of a PCB-based temperature control proved effective in stabilizing FAIMS signal characteristics and optimizing detection capabilities, particularly for VOCs such as acetone. These findings have significant implications for improving the accuracy and resolving power of FAIMS systems in VOC detection applications.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to comprehensively analyze the effects of whey protein (WP)-enriched supplement intake with or without resistance training (RT) in older patients, either from the community or hospital, who were diagnosed with sarcopenia according to the EWGSOP or AWGS criteria. METHODS: This meta-analysis study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023407885). We searched the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases for RCTs up to June 1, 2023. Standardized mean differences (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to estimate the pooled results. RESULTS: Ten RCT studies, including 1154 participants, were included and analyzed. The primary outcomes were the changes in muscle mass, strength, and physical performance. In WP group versus (vs.) Isocaloric placebo (PLA)/Routine consultation (RC) group, WP significantly increased the appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (SMD: 0.47, 95%CI: 0.23, 0.71), appendicular skeletal muscle mass (SMD: 0.28, 95%CI: 0.11, 0.45) and gait speed (SMD: 1.13, 95%CI: 0.82, 1.44) in older patients with sarcopenia. In WP with RT group vs. PLA/ RC group, there was significant increase in handgrip strength (SMD: 0.67, 95%CI: 0.29, 1.04). In addition, in the secondary outcomes, WP significantly reduced interleukin-6, significantly increased insulin-like growth factor-1 and albumin, promoted participants' intake of total energy and protein, enhanced activities of daily living scores in patients, and had no significant effect on BMI, weight, or fat mass. CONCLUSION: This review confirms that WP can improve various aspects of older adult with sarcopenia, thereby enhancing their overall physical condition. More studies should be conducted to validate this result and further explore the effects of WP and RT in patients with sarcopenia.

Soft ticks (Ixodida: Argasidae) are ectoparasites of terrestrial vertebrates with worldwide distributions. As one representative group of Argasidae, the genus Argas has an important vectorial role in transmitting zoonotic diseases. However, our knowledge of the subgenus Argas in China is still limited, as most literature only lists occurrence records or describes specific case reports without providing detailed morphological characteristics and further molecular data. This study aims to characterize Argas vulgaris through complete mitochondrial sequencing and morphological diagnostic techniques based on a batch of adult specimens collected from Ningxia Hui Autonomous Regions (NXHAR), North China. The morphology and microstructures of Ar. vulgaris and other lectotypes of argasid ticks in the subgenus Argas were also observed using a stereomicroscope. Following DNA extraction and sequencing, a complete mitochondrial sequence of Ar. vulgaris was assembled and analyzed within a phylogenetic context. The 14,479 bp mitogenome of Ar. vulgaris consists of 37 genes, including 13 genes for protein coding, two for ribosomal RNA, 22 for transfer RNA, and one for control region (D-loops). Phylogenetic analysis of Ar. vulgaris showed 98.27%-100% nucleotide identity with Ar. japonicus, indicating a close relationship between the two tick species. The morphological diagnostic features to differentiate Ar. vulgaris from other ticks within the subgenus Argas included the location of the anus and setae on the anterior lip of the female genital aperture. This study provided high-resolution scanning electron microscope images of female Ar. vulgaris and corresponding molecular data, representing valuable resources for future accurate species identification.

Background: A viral infection can modify the risk to subsequent viral infections via cross-protective immunity, increased immunopathology, or disease-driven behavioral change. There is limited understanding of virus-virus interactions due to lack of long-term population-level data. Methods: Our study leverages passive surveillance data of 10 human acute respiratory viruses from Beijing, Chongqing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai collected during 2009 to 2019: influenza A and B viruses; respiratory syncytial virus A and B; human parainfluenza virus (HPIV), adenovirus, metapneumovirus (HMPV), coronavirus, bocavirus (HBoV), and rhinovirus (HRV). We used a multivariate Bayesian hierarchical model to evaluate correlations in monthly prevalence of test-positive samples between virus pairs, adjusting for potential confounders. Results: Of 101,643 lab-tested patients, 33,650 tested positive for any acute respiratory virus, and 4,113 were co-infected with multiple viruses. After adjusting for intrinsic seasonality, long-term trends and multiple comparisons, Bayesian multivariate modeling found positive correlations for HPIV/HRV in all cities and for HBoV/HRV and HBoV/HMPV in three cities. Models restricted to children further revealed statistically significant associations for another ten pairs in three of the four cities. In contrast, no consistent correlation across cities was found among adults. Most virus-virus interactions exhibited substantial spatial heterogeneity. Conclusions: There was strong evidence for interactions among common respiratory viruses in highly populated urban settings. Consistent positive interactions across multiple cities were observed in viruses known to typically infect children. Future intervention programs such as development of combination vaccines may consider spatially consistent virus-virus interactions for more effective control.

There has been increasing global concern about the spillover transmission of pangolin-associated microbes. To assess the risk of these microbes for emergence as human pathogens, we integrated data from multiple sources to describe the distribution and spectrum of microbes harbored by pangolins. Wild and trafficked pangolins have been mainly recorded in Asia and Africa, while captive pangolins have been reported in European and North American countries. A total of 128 microbes, including 92 viruses, 25 bacteria, eight protists, and three uncharacterized microbes, have been identified in five pangolin species. Out of 128 pangolin-associated microbes, 31 (including 13 viruses, 15 bacteria, and three protists) have been reported in humans, and 54 are animal-associated viruses. The phylogenetic analysis of human-associated viruses carried by pangolins reveals that they are genetically close to those naturally circulating among human populations in the world. Pangolins harbor diverse microbes, many of which have been previously reported in humans and animals. Abundant viruses initially detected in pangolins might exhibit risks for spillover transmission.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) on the improvement of depressive-like behavior and the splenic α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAchR) / Janus kinase 2 (JAK2 / signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling pathway in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced depressive-like behavior rats, so as to investigate the antidepressant mechanism of taVNS. METHODS: SD rats were randomly divided into SD control group, SD model group and SD taVNS group, and α7nAchR knockout rats were also randomly divided into α7 control group, α7 model group and α7 taVNS group, with 6 rats in each group. Rat model of depressive-like behavior was established by intraperitoneal injection of LPS (1 mg/kg). Rats in both SD taVNS and α7 taVNS groups received taVNS intervention once a day (2 Hz/15 Hz, 2 mA, 30 min) from 7 days before LPS injection to 2 days after LPS injection, respectively. The mean speed, activity time and side immobility time in the open field test were recorded after taVNS. The contents of interleukin 10 (IL-10) and chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 1 (CXCL1) in serum were detected by electrochemiluminescence multifactorial method. The splenic phosphorylated (p)-JAK2 and p-STAT3 protein expressions were detected by Western blot. RESULTS: Compared with their respective control groups, the mean speed and active time were reduced (P<0.01, P<0.05, P<0.001) and the side immobility time was increased (P<0.001) in the open field test, serum IL-10 and CXCL1 levels were up-regulated (P<0.01, P<0.05, P<0.001), and splenic p-JAK2 protein expressions were down-regulated (P<0.05, P<0.01) in SD and α7nAchR knockout rats, and splenic p-STAT3 protein expression were down-regulated (P<0.05) in SD rats after LPS injection. Following taVNS intervention and in comparison with the model group , the mean speed and active time were increased (P<0.01) and the side immobility time was decreased (P<0.001) in the open field test, serum IL-10 and CXCL1 levels down-regulated (P<0.05), while splenic p-JAK2 and p-STAT3 protein expressions were up-regulated (P<0.01, P<0.001) in the SD taVNS group rather than in the α7 taVNS group. Compared with SD taVNS group, the α7 taVNS group showed increased (P<0.001, P<0.05) side immobility time in the open field test and serum IL-10, decreased splenic p-JAK2 and p-STAT3 protein expressions (P<0.01, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: taVNS may exert anti-inflammatory effects through modulating the splenic α7nAchR/JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway, thereby ameliorating LPS-induced depressive-like behavior in rats.

Primary headache is a very common and burdensome functional headache worldwide, which can be classified as migraine, tension-type headache (TTH), trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia (TAC), and other primary headaches. Managing and treating these different categories require distinct approaches, and accurate diagnosis is crucial. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has become a research hotspot to explore primary headache. By examining the interrelationships between activated brain regions and improving temporal and spatial resolution, fMRI can distinguish between primary headaches and their subtypes. Currently the most commonly used is the cortical brain mapping technique, which is based on blood oxygen level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD-fMRI). This review sheds light on the state-of-the-art advancements in data analysis based on fMRI technology for primary headaches along with their subtypes. It encompasses not only the conventional analysis methodologies employed to unravel pathophysiological mechanisms, but also deep-learning approaches that integrate these techniques with advanced statistical modeling and machine learning. The aim is to highlight cutting-edge fMRI technologies and provide new insights into the diagnosis of primary headaches.

Myodural bridge (MDB) is a dense connective tissue between suboccipital muscle and dura mater. However, there are few reports on the development and maturation of the human MDB. This study aims to explore the developmental relationship between suboccipital muscle and MDB. 30 head and neck specimens from human fetuses (F) ranging from the 12th to 41st week (W) were made into histological sections. The F12W sections showed evidence that the dura mater dominated by fibroblasts, attached to the posterior atlanto-axial membrane (PAAM) which completely sealed the atlanto-axial space. In the F13W stage, myofibrils of the suboccipital muscle fibers increased significantly in number. At the F14W stage, a gap was observed at the caudal end of the PAAM. Numerous myodural bridge-like structures were observed blending into the dura mater through the gap. At the F19W stage, muscle cells mature. Starting at the F21W stage, the MDB were observed as fibroblasts that cross the atlanto-axial interspace and attach to the dura mater. Therefore, the traction generated by the suboccipital muscles seems to promote the maturity of MDB. This study will provide new morphological knowledge to support future research on the function of the human MDB and regulating the development mechanism of MDB.

Acrostalagmus is known for its ability to produce numerous bioactive natural products, making it valuable in drug development. This review provides information on the sources, distribution, chemical structure types, biosynthesis, and biological activities of the compounds isolated from the genus Acrostalagmus in the family Plectosphaerellaceae from 1969 to 2022. The results show that 50% of the compounds isolated from Acrostalagmus are new natural products, and 82% of the natural products derived from this genus are from the marine Acrostalagmus. The compounds isolated from Acrostalagmus exhibit diverse structures, with alkaloids being of particular importance, accounting for 56% of the natural products derived from this genus. Furthermore, within the alkaloid class, 61% belong to the epipolythiodioxopiperazine family, highlighting the significance of epipolythiodioxopiperazine as a key characteristic structure within Acrostalagmus. Seventy-two percent of natural products derived from Acrostalagmus display bioactivities, with 50% of the bioactive compounds exhibiting more significant or comparable activities than their positive controls. Interestingly, 89% of potent active compounds are derived from marine fungi, demonstrating their promising potential for development. These findings underscore Acrostalagmus, particularly the marine-derived genus Acrostalagmusas, a valuable source of new bioactive secondary metabolites, and emphasize the vast resource importance of the ocean.

Understanding the assembly and turnover of microbial communities is crucial for gaining insights into the diversity and functioning of lake ecosystems, a fundamental and central issue in microbial ecology. The ecosystem of Taihu Lake has been significantly jeopardized due to urbanization and industrialization. In this study, we examined the diversity, assembly, and turnover of bacterial and fungal communities in Taihu Lake sediment. The results revealed strong bacterial stochasticity and fast fungal turnover in the sediment. Significant heterogeneity was observed among all sediment samples in terms of environmental factors, especially ORP, TOC, and TN, as well as microbial community composition and alpha diversity. For instance, the fungal richness index exhibited an approximate 3-fold variation. Among the environmental factors, TOC, TN, and pH had a more pronounced influence on the bacterial community composition compared to the fungal community composition. Interestingly, species replacement played a dominant role in microbial beta diversity, with fungi exhibiting a stronger pattern. In contrast, stochastic processes governed the community assembly of both bacteria and fungi, but were more pronounced for bacteria (R2 = 0.7 vs. 0.5). These findings deepen the understanding of microbial assembly and turnover in sediments under environmental stress and provide essential insights for maintaining the multifunctionality of lake ecosystems.

Background: Skin cutaneous melanoma (SKCM) is the deadliest dermatology tumor. Ongoing researches have confirmed that the NOD-like receptors (NLRs) family are crucial in driving carcinogenesis. However, the function of NLRs signaling pathway-related genes in SKCM remains unclear. Objective: To establish and identify an NLRs-related prognostic signature and to explore its predictive power for heterogeneous immune response in SKCM patients. Methods: Establishment of the predictive signature using the NLRs-related genes by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator-Cox regression analysis (LASSO-COX algorithm). Through univariate and multivariate COX analyses, NLRs signature's independent predictive effectiveness was proven. CIBERSORT examined the comparative infiltration ratios of 22 distinct types of immune cells. RT-qPCR and immunohistochemistry implemented expression validation for critical NLRs-related prognostic genes in clinical samples. Results: The prognostic signature, including 7 genes, was obtained by the LASSO-Cox algorithm. In TCGA and validation cohorts, SKCM patients with higher risk scores had remarkably poorer overall survival. The independent predictive role of this signature was confirmed by multivariate Cox analysis. Additionally, a graphic nomogram demonstrated that the risk score of the NLRs signature has high predictive accuracy. SKCM patients in the low-risk group revealed a distinct immune microenvironment characterized by the significantly activated inflammatory response, interferon-α/γ response, and complement pathways. Indeed, several anti-tumor immune cell types were significantly accumulated in the low-risk group, including M1 macrophage, CD8 T cell, and activated NK cell. It is worth noting that our NLRs prognostic signature could serve as one of the promising biomarkers for predicting response rates to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy. Furthermore, the results of expression validation (RT-qPCR and IHC) were consistent with the previous analysis. Conclusion: A promising NLRs signature with excellent predictive efficacy for SKCM was developed.

BACKGROUND: Acute diarrhea with fever can potentially represent a more severe form of the disease compared to non-febrile diarrhea. This study was to investigate the epidemiological characteristics and enteric pathogen composition of febrile-diarrheal patients, and to explore factors including pathogens associated with fever by age group. METHODS: A nationwide surveillance study of acute diarrheal patients of all ages was conducted in 217 sentinel hospitals from 31 provinces (autonomous regions or municipalities) in China between 2011 and 2020. Seventeen diarrhea-related pathogens, including seven viruses and ten bacteria, were investigated and their association with occurrence of fever symptoms was assessed using multivariate logistic analysis. RESULTS: A total of 146,296 patients with acute diarrhea (18.6% with fever) were tested. Th diarrheal children below 5 years had the highest frequency of fever (24.2%), and related to significantly higher prevalence of viral enteropathogens (40.2%) as compared with other age groups (P < 0.001). Within each age group, the febrile-diarrheal patients were associated with a significantly higher prevalence of bacterial pathogens than afebrile-diarrheal patients (all P < 0.01). There was discrepancy when each pathogen was compared, i.e., nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) was overrepresented in febrile vs non-febrile patients of all age groups, while the febrile vs non-febrile difference for diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) was only significant for adult groups. The multivariate analysis revealed significant association between fever and infection with rotavirus A among children [odds ratio (OR) = 1.60], for DEC in adult groups (OR = 1.64), for NTS in both children (OR = 2.95) and adults (OR = 3.59). CONCLUSIONS: There are significant discrepancy of the infected enteric pathogens in patients with acute diarrhea with fever between age groups, and it is valuable for priority detection of NTS and rotavirus A in patients with children < 5 years old and NTS and DEC in adult patients. The results may be useful in identifying dominant pathogen candidates for the application of diagnostic assays and prevention control.

By designing a liquid crystal cell with comb electrode structure, the alignment modulation of nematic liquid crystal in the cell can be realized after the electric field is applied. In different orientation regions, the incident laser beam can deflect at different angles. At the same time, by changing the incident angle of the laser beam, the reflection modulation of the laser beam on the interface of the liquid crystal molecular orientation change can be realized. Based on the above discussion, we then demonstrate the modulation of liquid crystal molecular orientation arrays on nematicon pairs. In different orientation regions of liquid crystal molecules, nematicon pairs can exhibit various combinations of deflections, and these deflection angles are modulable under external fields. Deflection and modulation of nematicon pairs have potential applications in optical routing and optical communication.

We present a high-performance flexible bending strain sensor for directional motion detection of human hands and soft robotic grippers. The sensor was fabricated using a printable porous conductive composite composed of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and carbon black (CB). The utilization of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) in the ink formulation induced a phase segregation between the CB and PDMS and led to a porous structure inside the printed films after being vapored. This simple and spontaneously formed conductive architecture provided superior directional bend-sensing characteristics compared to conventional random composites. The resulting flexible bending sensors displayed high bidirectional sensitivity (gauge factor of 45.6 under compressive bending and 35.2 under tensile bending), negligible hysteresis, good linearity (>0.99), and excellent bending durability (over 10,000 cycles). The multifunctional applications of these sensors, including human motion detection, object-shape monitoring, and robotic perceptions, are demonstrated as a proof-of-concept.

BACKGROUND: Long-term use of anti-resorptive or anti-angiogenic drugs in cancer patients with odontogenic infections may lead to medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). This study investigated whether anti-angiogenic agents aggravate MRONJ occurrence in anti-resorptive-treated patients. METHODS: The clinical stage and jawbone exposure of MRONJ patients caused by different drug regimens were analyzed to ascertain the aggravation effect of anti-angiogenic drugs on anti-resorptive drug-based MRONJ. Next, a periodontitis mice model was established, and tooth extraction was performed after administering anti-resorptive and/or anti-angiogenic drugs; the imaging and histological change of the extraction socket were observed. Moreover, the cell function of gingival fibroblasts was analyzed after the treatment with anti-resorptive and/or anti-angiogenic drugs in order to evaluate their effect on the gingival tissue healing of the extraction socket. RESULTS: Patients treated with anti-angiogenic and anti-resorptive drugs had an advanced clinical stage and a bigger proportion of necrotic jawbone exposure compared to patients treated with anti-resorptive drugs alone. In vivo study further indicated a greater loss of mucosa tissue coverage above the tooth extraction in mice treated with sunitinib (Suti) + zoledronate (Zole) group (7/10) vs. Zole group (3/10) and Suti group (1/10). Micro-computed tomography (CT) and histological data showed that the new bone formation in the extraction socket was lower in Suti + Zole and Zole groups vs. Suti and control groups. In vitro data showed that the anti-angiogenic drugs had a stronger inhibitory ability on the proliferation and migration function of gingival fibroblasts than anti-resorptive drugs, and the inhibitory effect was obviously enhanced after combining zoledronate and sunitinib. CONCLUSION: Our findings provided support for a synergistic contribution of anti-angiogenic drugs to anti-resorptive drugs-based MRONJ. Importantly, the present study revealed that anti-angiogenic drugs alone do not induce severe MRONJ but aggravate the degree of MRONJ via the enhanced inhibitory function of gingival fibroblasts based on anti-resorptive drugs.
